USDMRather than use the new, hi-tech 3.5 V6 used in the 1998 Trooper, the VehiCROSS soldiers on with an uprated version of the old 3.2L unit. It produces only 3 bhp less than the new motor however, with 212 bhp coming at 5,600 rpm. The main difference comes in the torque output. The VehiCROSS gives 210 lb-ft, whereas the Trooper has 228 lb-ft. With four valves per cylinder, it is a little peakier than some other off-roaders, pushing the VehiCROSS towards the top of the 4x4 performance league.
